Reuters reports that the next generation iPhone will start production in July and likely shipping in September.

Apple Inc suppliers will begin production of its next-generation iPhone in July this year, with the finished product likely to begin shipping in September, three people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

Reuters cites three people "familiar with the matter". The brief news article also claims that the new iPhone will have a faster processor but "will look largely similar to the current iPhone 4". No other details are provided, but the timeline is in line with recent rumors about the iPhone 5.

The faster processor will likely be the Dual-Core A5 processor that was introduced alongside the iPad.

If you can have a bigger screen without a physically larger device size and weight, then yes, it is necessarily better.

Not if the amount of pixels cant be increased, because the resolution would take a hit. Considering the Retina display is a major selling point for Apple its not likely. Of course you would probably prefer a 42" 720p tv over a 36" 1080p also. Some people are just quantity over quality. Enjoy your EVO.

Apple potentially ships new iPhone 2-3 months outside of loose, self imposed schedule.

Users worlds fall apart, swear bitter revenge, Apple goes Bankrupt.

...Makes sense.

I'm on the 3GS > iPhone 5 > iPhone 7 upgrade sequence. I'm glad to be on it. I don't like to be a Beta tester. If there is an unseen design flaw (antennagate), it will give Apple a full year to "hopefully" fix the issue. I plan on using this phone without a case, so I don't want any antenna issues. I'm doubtful the iPhone 5 will have a better antenna. The Verizon iPhone has the same issues as the ATT iPhone. If Apple was going to fix it, they would have fixed it then....

Not a summer update? Surprising.

Summer lasts until September 23rd.

If it's going to be delayed that far, that's pretty far into both Verizon and AT&T's LTE rollout. I really hope this new phone has LTE. Apple was massively late to the game with 3G, I really don't want them to be massively late to 4G, too. (aka: I'm waiting for a 4G iPhone to upgrade, and I would rather upgrade sooner than later.)

to really stay ahead of the market Apple will need to:

add a 4" screen
keep the same form factor
add the dual core A5 processor
update the GPU to something similar (but most likely not as powerful) as in the iPad 2
while keeping the same or possibly even improving the battery life
add a 64GB version
(possible 8 MP backlit CMOS sensor camera along side possible 1080p recording since the iPad can now output in full 1080p through HDMI)

Since it sounds like Apple is going to make us wait till September anything less than this rather reasonable list would be a major letdown while allowing the competition more time to get caught up.
