flightcontrolrocketFiremint/EA has released their followup to the critically acclaimed Flight Control, one of the first "classic" iPhone games that pioneered the line-drawing game mechanic. The new game, called Flight Control Rocket, takes the air traffic control simulator to space with a huge variety of new ships with lots of new abilities.

Leave the terrestrial skies of Earth and venture into a whole new galaxy of adventure, action and addictive, path-drawing gameplay! Relish compelling yet intuitive touch screen controls; soak in the retro Sci-Fi visuals and original music score and unlock a cast of quirky Robots to grant your mothership a competitive edge.

Prepare to be amazed… your trip through the vast unknown is about to begin!

Like many games released recently, Flight Control Rocket includes an in-game currency that can be obtained from gameplay or via in-app purchase. The coins can be used to buy additional gameplay stages, "bots" or other items which help the player in-game.

Flight Control Rocket is a universal app, available on the App Store for $0.99. [Direct Link]

I guess 2012 is the year of "We couldn't think of another game to follow up our hit, so we placed it IN SPACE".

Just kidding, I'm downloading it!

The original Flight Control is still one of my favorites-- what a great design! On the other hand, I hate these "buy more tokens" games. I was glad to see the developers at Firemint rewarded by the acquisition, but unfortunately it means I, as a user, have to put up with EA's heavy handed approach to things.

It almost looks like there is too much stuff. And a bit confusing. But it looks really good.

My only problem with this is that Flight Control was something that my mom and dad both enjoyed on the iPad. This new version with all the extra mechanics makes it a little too hard for them. What made Flight Control so much fun was its simplicity and easy concept.

That was my first reaction too. The beauty of Flight Control was its simplicity, with the difficulty coming from adding more items at a time. You'd never know though, it's hard to know until we've played it.

I wonder if it will suppor the new retina iPad display. I sure hope so. Guess I'll find out tomorrow!
