Alleged 10.8-Inch iPad Design Schematics Emerge

Alleged design schematics for an updated iPad with a 10.8-inch display have been shared by 91Mobiles.

The schematics reportedly show an ‌iPad‌ with a 10.8-inch display. This correlates with a previous report from supply-chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, which said that Apple plans to launch a new 10.8-inch ‌iPad‌ in the second half of 2020.

Although 91Mobiles claims that the schematics are for a low cost, eighth-generation ‌iPad‌, it is also possible that the device depicted is in fact an iPad Air 4.

Earlier this week, photos purportedly showed a leaked manual for the ‌iPad Air‌ 4, and the ‌iPad‌ from that leaked manual looks identical to the device in these schematics. Ming Chi-Kuo's report also did not specify if the 10.8-inch ‌iPad‌ model will be a new version of the existing 10.2-inch ‌iPad‌ or the 10.5-inch ‌iPad Air‌, and it seems that leaks about both iPads may have been conflated.

The schematics suggest that the unreleased ‌iPad‌ is to have dual speakers, four microphones, and a USB-C port. The rear of the device shows a single camera with an LED flash and a magnetic smart connector. The placement of this smart connector bolsters previous rumors that the Magic Keyboard accessory will be supported by new ‌iPad‌ models.

91Mobiles claims that this ‌iPad‌ will have Face ID, but that seems unlikely given rumors of the ‌iPad Air‌ 4 having a Touch ID sensor on the power button instead of ‌Face ID‌.

The images indicate that the device will look similar to the iPad Pro, with thinner bezels and squared-off edges. A four stereo-speaker setup and dual cameras would be reserved for the ‌iPad Pro‌. If this device is indeed the low-cost ‌iPad‌, the schematics would indicate that Apple is looking to consolidate design language across the ‌iPad‌ lineup. It is also possible that both the low-cost ‌iPad‌ and ‌iPad Air‌ 4 will share the same design, hence the conflation of leaks, but differ in terms of internals.

The new ‌iPad‌ is rumored to launch as early as next month. Apple filed a lengthy list of unreleased ‌iPad‌ and Apple Watch models in a Eurasian database this week, signaling that new devices are on the horizon. According to leaker Jon Prosser, Apple plans to introduce at least some new ‌iPad‌ and Apple Watch models via a press release in September, followed by new iPhones at an event in October.

We’re now in the next phase of Apple where they make their devices slightly different so case & accessory companies can make more money. There’s not much of a point of this than increase sales and decrease case reusability and compatibility. This only increases waste and hurt the environment in my opinion.

I’m guessing price increase since it is now an iPad Pro lite.
I really don’t understand why Apple keeps pushing iPads up on the price ladder. In the past, the focus was to keep the pricing low or even make it less so more people can get it (In the past, Apple worked so hard keeping the flagship iPad to start at $499).

Remember this lineup? Look at the starting prices, and compare it to today.

Hopefully the future is just iPad mini, iPad, and iPad Pro. It's a bit confusing at the moment.

Totally agree. What the heck is the point? We now have 9.7, 10.5, 11, 12.9, and soon, a 10.8 inch iPad? I miss the days of Apple’s “one iPad to rule them all” mindset. I mean, fragmentation was a huge talking point for them back in the day!
In theory this would replace the 10.5. The 9.7 form factor is also dead

It would be 10.2 (like iphone SE/budget), 10.8 Air (like XR/11), 11 Pro (Pro) and 12.9 Pro (Pro Max)

There are ample people who want an appox 11 inch display device but not for $799; but also not the budget $329 one with Touch ID and thick bezels

This Air/10.8 would replace the Air in that middle ground. Closer to a Pro look/features without the Pro pricepoint. Think iPhone XR/11; no touch ID and thick 2010 bezels budge device, but not Pro specs either. Presumably at the $499-550 price point.

It will sell a ton in that middle ground.

Same. Let me try and understand this: a $300-ish base iPad will support a $300-ish keyboard accessory? I have a 7th gen iPad and an iPad Air 3, and the smart keyboard cover works with them both. If this rumor is even slightly true, which I am 50/50 on (I would think this is a new Air but that's just me) then most likely....I'll pass. Cannot justify a $300+ keyboard accessory for an iPad. Double the price just for a keyboard?

Believe it or not, my usage of ipads has decreased rather than increased lately. Much prefer my MacBook air/pro, and use the ipads mostly at night for in bed reading. That's just me.
