My video tests showed that the 8gb does swap up to 5gb and up to 50% pressure during export. So I’m thinking the 8gb just slow down exports but not really the performance. Still if you are going to keep this go for 16gb if doing heavier work.

Yeah.. I went from the Pro 16" to the M1 Air, and don't miss the Touch Bar at all. I've also not encountered any slowdowns nor would I feel I would need the extra hp from a cooling solution (even running some pretty demanding compiling tasks). The Touch Bar has been a constant nag for me, especially working outside where it's not visible, changing constantly, and since it's not on any external keyboard it's just hard to get used to in any work flow for me.

To me, biggest upgrades on the pro vs air are 100 extra nits of screen brightness and around 2 hours extra of battery power, but I'll probably take the air perks over that (smaller power adapter, lower cost, and slightly lighter machine). Either one is really great machine though!
I went with the Pro because of some the benefits you mentioned: extra battery life, 500 bits of brightness, better audio. It also felt for me like the logical choice to upgrade from my Early 2015 MBP 13. My brother has a 2017 13 MBP with the TouchBar and I haven’t heard him complain. My use of the function keys on my current MBP beyond muting volume is quite limited anyway.

I originally was planning to wait until 2023, but I could not resist. Drawback here is, this pushes out my next upgrade to 2023.

Tried that. Just says Amazon $50 Discount. Tried both colors.
It showed up when I went to checkout, not just the cart.

It’s not as bad as you think. MacBooks with the M1 are incredible performers that have great ram management. Check out some YouTube reviews on how it handles 8gb ram. It really is quite impressive.

Only has 8GB RAM
not future proof with just 8GB ram
Even $1500 with a 512GB SSD AND STILL 8GB RAM only.

I'm not sure if a fan and a touchbar are worth the upgade from the Air (assuming you want the touchbar). Still the M1 processor is amazing! Maybe there will be a "hack" (probably not an Apple update) in the future to allow the processor to run faster and actually utilize the fan? It seems like Apple WAY underclocked the processor. Just a thought.
