Samsung Display Preparing OLED Orders for 2022 MacBook Pro Models

Apple display supplier Samsung is in the early stages of preparing its production line for OLED displays that are expected to be used in future models of the MacBook Pro, according to new information shared today by The Elec.

The report says that Samsung Display has begun early development of a new production process for OLED displays. This new production capacity will be used by Apple for future OLED MacBooks, according to the report.

DigiTimes has reported that Apple is tentatively scheduled to release a 16 to 17-inch MacBook Pro with an OLED display in 2022. Apple is also reportedly planning a 10.9-inch iPad and 12.9-inch iPad Pro with OLED displays for the same year.

Apple just this year released a new ‌iPad Pro‌ with a mini-LED display and is expected to be just weeks away from launching updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with similar display technology. ‌DigiTimes‌ said that Apple would allow ‌iPad‌ and MacBook models with OLED and mini-LED displays, which are considerably different technologies, to coexist within their respective product lineups.

Apple currently uses OLED displays in its flagship iPhones, Apple Watch models, and the Touch Bar in the current MacBook Pros. The company has yet to expand OLED technology to other products.

Can't really see the advantages of OLED over mini-LED. This is confusing.
OLED displays light each pixel individually (meaning when there are black scenes, the black is pure black), while miniLED is still an LCD panel but has multiple backlight zones to mimic the same thing OLED does, except it's worse due to not enough zones (you get blooming and some other ghosting effects), OLED is also more color accurate and doesn't require cooling

The advantage of miniLED display is that it's higher in brightness, but OLED can reproduce true HDR due to the native 1:infintiy contrast (miniLED has a typical 1:1200 or so contrast ratio when not in HDR)

New MacBooks with Mini-LED this year only to be replaced by new MacBooks with OLED next year? Seems unlikely. Unless Apple now starts an annual MacBook update cycle akin to the iPhone.

Although I so wish we could just skip that lousy Mini-LED crutch and go straight to OLED MacBooks.

I don't understand why they just don't focus on one type of technology, instead of having to juggle between three. They just released the iPads Pros with mini-LED, and now what, they release new laptops with OLED?
I can't understand the logic here.
Because these are rumours and most site make crap up as they go along. The only person who has any decent sources in Supply Chain is Kuo. You should also be aware The Elec is a Korean site, which means they have a interest to pop up certain Korean tech news. That is the same with DigitTimes to Taiwanese tech.

OLED on a PC is possibly the worst idea ever even with the current burn in migration. It just doesn't work.

OLED displays are OLED. Displays with mini-LED are LCD.

I believe Apple will let you choose what kind of display: miniled or oled you want during order process. This is already being offered by other manufacturers.
