Add Wireless CarPlay to Your Vehicle With Alpine's New 11-Inch Screen That Hovers Over the Dashboard

For those interested in adding wireless CarPlay to their vehicle on an aftermarket basis, Alpine today introduced its next-generation Halo receiver with an 11-inch capacitive touchscreen that hovers over the dashboard. Despite having such a large screen, the receiver has a single-DIN chassis, allowing it to be installed in a wide range of vehicles.

Alpine's previous Halo receiver was limited to wired CarPlay, but the new iLX-F511 model includes support for both wired and wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a higher-resolution 1280x720 display and high-resolution audio playback. The new receiver is also compatible with SiriusXM 360L, which offers both satellite radio and on-demand audio.

The screen can be tilted at four pre-set angles to better match the tilt and height of the dashboard, and other features of the receiver include hands-free Bluetooth phone calls outside of CarPlay, one HDMI input and output, one AUX input, two USB-A ports, rearview camera compatibility, iDatalink Maestro support, and more.

Alpine said the iLX-F511 will ship in February 2022 for a suggested price of $1,199.95 in the United States, and a smaller 9-inch iLX-F509 model will also be available for a suggested price of $999.95. Both units will be available at select car audio retailers.

It blows my mind that I can buy a 4K 50” TV for 300 bucks but an 11” 720p screen for a car is $1200…

And someone should invent a way to use an iPad for CarPlay. For $1200 you could have a freaking 12” M1 iPad in your car.

I'd rather spend half the money on an appropriately sized iPad dedicated for the car, with the audio all going over BlueTooth or into an AUX input. What I do like about Carplay is that it's shining a light on the 24-carat dogcrap infotainment GUIs that just about every single car manufacturer has.

Eh, I don't have an M1 iPad, but I've got the next best thing.

Added wireless CarPlay with a chincy USB adapter from Amazon. Actually works great 99% of the time. ??‍♂️

It’s 2022. I don’t understand the target market of aftermarket entertainment units especially with manufacturers being required to include screens and backup cameras due to new regulations from 2018.

It’s 2022. I don’t understand the target market of aftermarket entertainment units especially with manufacturers being required to include screens due to (upcoming) reverse camera requirements.
That’s because there really isn’t a ‘target demographic’ for $1200 units. I’m not chastising the functionality of what Alpine is offering, but are average consumers really spending this type of money on a 2014 Subaru for example? I doubt it. They probably would rather just trade in/upgrade to a vehicle that actually offers built-in CarPlay when that time happens. If you think about the cost of this unit and what it cost to have installed, that’s a pretty hefty investment, which if I were to buy something like this, I would be thinking logically, how long does one plan on keeping their vehicle?
