Both of these are in stock at Apple with pick up today at the store or shipping immediately. For a $50-$65 discount I would really have to look up the return policy of the seller. I guess if you were really pinching pennies this would work but I don’t know if I would buy it from a third-party retailer to save $65

Yikes. The base 256gb model is not a deal at any price. Stay away.

Get 'em now, especially the larger SSD models, as they will likely be backordered soon.

Apple has far too many Laptop offerings in the current market. Old Air, New Air, 13" Pro, 14" Pro, 16" pro, possible 15" Pro. In a recessionary market, fewer sku numbers means less parts required, better profit, better to ride out tough economic times. This leads to quicker & more price reductions across the line to move inventory.
Agreed. Simplifying the product lineup (and corporate structure) was the first thing Jobs did when he returned to Apple, and sometimes it feels like it has drifted back towards model bloat.

Sounds like they are selling them at cost or just above it... Apple's margin for the dealers is razor thin. Usually like 5-15% depending on the device. Smaller devices like iPods, Watches, iPads, Apple TV, HomePod, etc. were closer to the 5%. Lower end MacBooks/Macs were usually around that 10% mark. Higher end MacBooks/Macs were usually closer to the 15%.

Edit: these figures are from 2017, but I'm sure they haven't improved if it's changed at all.
