Another week, another case of the Samsung S9 5k 27" Viewfinity being reduced to almost half price in the US. Meanwhile, it's still full price in the UK and the only reason I'm not buying four or five of these for our office is that I know they're keeping the price artificially high here compared to the US so as a potential and willing customer, I'd feel like I'd be being mugged if I bought them now.

It’s crazy that they launched the monitor at the same price point as the studio display (1600$) and now it’s down to 350$ ?

Can’t be that good in the end.

Very happy studio display customer here btw!
I believe you are confusing S9 vs. S8.

But standard practice for Samsung (and non-Apple tech makers in general): launch new at market pricing and then- over time- work the price down. When it gets to closeout level, it will be available for as much as 40%+ off. It has nothing to do with quality or demand- just normal business practices.

I managed to time the purchase of my Samsung TV at closeout: retail when launched over $6K, I paid $3200 for it. In between those extremes, it had many sales testing demand at $4999, then $4499 and so on. It was highest-rated TV at the time and has been a fantastic TV since I've owned it.

Apple- on the other hand- locks the price for life of device, even as the tech inside ages and cost (to Apple) shrinks. Those of us buying ASD now are likely much more profitable than those who bought it at launch. Shareholders rejoice! ???

Problem with that S line is that Samsung cannot get it through their heads that people want a monitor that behaves like a monitor, not a "smart monitor" that also wants to be a TV/streaming device.

The idea COULD work IF Samsung allowed you to force the thing to behave as a monitor and not anything else. But it's like an over-friendly puppy; not matter what settings you give it, it keeps popping out of monitor mode and asking " would like me to stream some content for you??? would you like me to act as your home hub???"
NO. NO NO NO!!! Just calm the f**k down, go back to being a monitor, and stop interrupting me once a week!!!

Do not buy this thing, no matter the price. The hassle of the random, uncontrollable interruptions to your work flow is just not worth even zero dollars.

Or you can see it otherwise. Samsung will probably come out with a modern successor while Apple is milking its loyal customers with old tech till the last drop. You can be assured Samsung will make successors. For Apple’s aging studio display it begs the question.

And I just do not get why the ViewFinity S9 5K Smart Monitor is so popular… its all plastic and absolutely not that good (color wise) I had to return mine while the color, even after calibration, was and stayed so bad… for home user maybe, but professional no way

Every time this Viewfinity goes on sale I repeat the ritual: Lament that there’s no HDMI input, so the smart TV features lose relevance when my game console can’t join the party. Then I look up the reviews and see the quality control issues. And remind myself why I didn’t bite last time.
