I got my brother’s family the m1 iMac when it came out and it’s great for them (2 kids 14, 11). I got them the 16gb ram, 1 tb ssd version. No need to upgrade at all. This is a good family computer.

16/512 with 10 cores should be the Standard configuration if not 1TB. This is a desktop, it should be more powerful/better equipped than the similar MacBook just like it used to be.

I remember a long time ago when I purchased my first Mac it was between the iMac and the 13” MBP. The iMac had quadruple the storage, double the RAM and a faster CPU for less money. So I chose the iMac. This was 2010.

Now the iMac starts with basically the same specs as the MBA but it’s more expensive? The iMac used to be a great value because while you gave up the portability of a laptop you got a far more powerful machine with gobs more storage for a lesser price.

What is Apple even doing with the iMac now? It is a shell of what it used to offer.

$200 for 2 gpu cores? Am I missing something?
It's not just the 2 gpu cores. You also gain 2 additional ports, gigabit ethernet and a Touch ID keyboard. I think that's worth $200.
