AirTag 2 Launching Next Year With These New Features

Apple is expected to release an AirTag 2 next year, and a few new features and changes have already been rumored for the item tracker.

AirTag and Lavender iPhone
Below, we recap what to expect from the AirTag 2:

  • The new AirTag is expected to be equipped with Apple's second-generation Ultra Wideband chip for longer range. The chip debuted last year in the iPhone 15 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2, and Apple said it offers up to three times the range as its first-generation Ultra Wideband chip in the current AirTag. On the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models, there is a Precision Finding feature that can help you to find your friends in busy places, and it offers up to approximately 60 meters (around 200 feet) range. The new AirTag could offer similar range.
  • The new AirTag's built-in speaker is expected to be more difficult to remove, as a stalking-related safety measure.
  • The new AirTag is rumored to have improved integration with the Apple Vision Pro, but there are no specific details about this.
  • No major design changes are expected.

The new AirTag is rumored to launch in mid-2025. The current AirTag debuted in April 2021.

A credit card-sized AirTag would be amazing. Put it in your wallet and forget it. Even if the thickness of several stacked credit cards, having something longer and flat would fit in a lot of places that a regular AirTag can't, and there are already third-party solutions like this.

The overwhelming majority of people are trying to recover lost and stolen items with AirTags.

Being able to catch a thief is more important that the 0.0000001% of the time that the device could be used to "stalk" someone. It's ridiculous that Apple is impeding the usefulness of their own product.

I suspect if someone wants to stalk they will find a way to disable the speaker, even if it is harder than on the current ones.
I'm guessing they will add some sort of hardwired failsafe that disables the tracking features if the speaker is physically disconnected, similar to how the FaceTime camera is hardwired to the green light on Macs to prevent tampering, like an app activating the camera without the green light coming on.

That would be great.

I'd also like to see AirTag technology built into Apple's portable devices. It won't happen, but with a specially designed battery capability to keep it working after the devices battery dies would be useful.

* No major design changes are expected.

You best be sure that there’ll be enough of a change though that no first gen keyrings or cases will fit the new tags
