Apple Says Several Car Makers Still Plan to Support Next-Generation CarPlay

Apple today confirmed that "several" car makers still plan to support next-generation CarPlay in future vehicle models. Apple said each car brand will share more details as they near the announcements of these vehicles, but it did not provide a timeframe. Apple previously said next-generation ‌CarPlay‌ would launch in 2024, but that did not happen.

Apple's statement about next-generation ‌CarPlay‌:

The next generation of CarPlay builds on years of success and insights gained from CarPlay, delivering the best of Apple and the automaker in a deeply integrated and customizable experience. We continue to work closely with several automakers, enabling them to showcase their unique brand and visual design philosophies in the next generation of CarPlay. Each car brand will share more details as they near the announcements of their models that will support the next generation of CarPlay.

Apple also remains committed to its current ‌CarPlay‌ platform, and said it is available in over 98% of new cars sold in the U.S. over the past few years.

Apple previously said committed car makers included Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Polestar, Porsche, Renault, and Volvo. In December 2023, Aston Martin and Porsche previewed next-generation ‌CarPlay‌ designs, but have yet to deliver. It is unclear which car makers are currently working with Apple.

This news comes just minutes after Apple updated its website to remove the missed 2024 timeframe that it had previously stated for next-generation ‌CarPlay‌. Apple first previewed the software system at WWDC 2022.

Seriously. The giant, iPad Pro-sized touch screen in my wife's new Subaru is pretty cool, except when I have to adjust something while driving. Not a fan. Way too much to look at at a glance and (of course) nothing findable by touch alone.

Meanwhile, my Honda has a big touch screen for media functions and car preferences, etc., but the HVAC controls are all tactile buttons, and even the audio volume is controlled by a nice, big, easy to grip, easy to find knob. Praise!

There is nothing about this all-screen CarPlay concept that I find desirable in the slightest, even if it looks cool.

Interesting that they didnt name the manufacturers
I'm sure it will be some luxury brands most of us can't afford.

Bingo. That is a big reason why I haven't upgrade to the latest Subaru models. I LIKE having real buttons I can fiddle with without looking at them.

Apple was wasting their time with the "Apple Car" project, and google left them in the dust with something that is actually useful to automakers, Android Automotive.

Stick to what you're good at. Google wasn't trying to build a car. They made an OS to run the car functions.

You aren't going to get it. Voice control would be more effective outside of anything that isn't on the steering wheel anyway.

Like it or not, this is a Blackberry situation. The tactile buttons are going away, or we won't even need to drive anymore, in which case this is a non-issue.
no, some car manufacturers are returning to put "real" buttons back in new cars, case in point 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 for the climate controls.

Tesla removed the stalks in the revamped Model 3, yet in the upcoming model Y revamp, they are still there - why do you think that is?

I think the opposite (back to buttons) will happen over time.
